09.05.09 - Malahide Sea Scouts - Laura's Fun Day
Last year, Laura Brennan, our good school friend passed
away very suddenly. It affected us all differently. Laura's
parents subsequently set up "The Laura Brennan Charitable
Trust" in order to help sick children and their families
in the area. The Trust endeavors to ensure that families
looking after a sick or disabled child will be able to
source help locally if their needs are not being met through
HSE Services. For example, a set number of nursing hours
per month for a child with an acute illness to enable
parents suffering from lack of sleep to get some much
needed rest or respite care for a sick child or teenager
to give their siblings some 'one on one' time with their
parents (www.laurabrennan.org).
We decided that we would like to help them in their
work somehow. We put our heads together and came up
with "Laura's Fun Day".
Our aim was to raise funds by giving young Scouts (Cubs
and Beavers) a chance to do water activities such as
sailing, kayaking and rowing (which they rarely get
to do) along with fun activities on land such as treasure
hunts, games, face painting, etc ...
Laura's Fun Day took place on the 9th May 2009 with
a high tide at 12:45 and the promise of summer weather.
Confident that we had covered all eventualities, the
day began with a bright and VERY early morning. We set
up the den and the ward room (where administration would
take place). To ensure safety, we got traffic cones
from Malahide Gardaí and blocked off the area
between the Scout Den and the Slipway. First all of
the team leaders were briefed and given the equipment
they needed to run their activities. The activities
included Water Activities (rowing, sailing and kayaking),
Cub Treasure Hunt, I’m a Cub – Get Me Out
of Here, Arts and Crafts, Beaver Treasure Hunt and AFAR
Talk.
We raised a total of €2,100 for the “Laura
Brennan Charitable Trust”. On top of this it was
a great day and Cubs, Beavers and Scouts alike really
enjoyed themselves.
